We are often asked by our customers, who are looking to create a new campervan, on which vehicle they should base their conversion?

To try to help you and them make the decision here is:

Camper Kong guide to: The Citroën Relay

The Citroën Relay has a gross vehicle weight of up to four tonnes, with payloads of almost two tonnes. It is available in five lengths, four wheel bases and three heights encompassing usable spaces from 8m3 to 17m3. Overall its a very flexible van to use as a base for a campervan conversion.

It is available in panel van, enterprise, chassis cab and crew cab variants. With such a diverse and comprehensive range, the Citroën relay can be tailored to meet even the most specialist customer. Powering the Citroën relay has three diesel engine: a 2.2HDi 100hp optimised for low emissions and low fuel consumption, a 2.2HDi 120hp with exceptional; pulling power and a 3.0HDi 160hp which gives maximum power and torque. All three have manual gearboxes, the more powerful ones working with six speeds, to deliver the impressive performance that is associated with Citroën diesel technology.

Camper Kong recommend you use the L3 H2 HDi 120 for a conversion similar to the one in our photos. This model has to offer a gross vehicle weight of 3500kg, a kerb weight of 1975kg, and a length of 5998mm And a height of 2524mm. This gives Camper Kong a space of 3705mm Length, by 1932mm Height, by 1870mm Width to work with and it delivers an economical 32mpg.

The relay is very similar to the Peugeot boxer and the fiat decato. Jason and Martin enjoy converting the relay because it’s a good big canvass to work with, everyone is insulated with rock wool and lined with marine ply to start the conversion and we always endeavour to use high quality products throughout. Camper Kong are also happy to use any product that the customer suggests that is economically and practically viable.

Jason and Martin are more than happy to chop and change for each individual customers needs.

To give an idea of cost, the van in the photos cost £14,000 to convert and its specification included:

- Six seitz double glazed windows - Two mini heki roof vents
- 65 litre compressor fridge - Smev sink/drainer and three ring hob
- Smev mini oven and grill - Malaga hot water boiler
- 110amp leisure battery - Thetford toilet, tip up sink and shower
- LED lighting - Swivel seats
- PC100 control unit - Fold up bed (then when you’re not camping you can still go and get your second-hand grandfather clock!)
